FLY
The Story:
Just over a year ago, we started a valuable and friendly manufacturing partnership with Jón Ingi´s fishing fly workshop and his wife Som in the town of Mae Sot, Thailand. To our luck they were forming a small jewelry team that their friend, Elly Bashara jewelry designer, had set up. The jewelry team is managed by a unique boy, Shine Lin Oo, who was raised in a refugee camp in Myanmar. He learned English at the camp, which was his fortune, but beyond that he is ambitious, smart, warm, artistic and exceptionally proficient. Today he lives with his mother and sister and finances her education, which is a rare opportunity for young girls in Myanmar. We visited Shine Lin Oo, Jón Ingi, Som and all of their team in the spring of 2018 and have worked with them ever since. Recently, we received another beautiful shipment of fly bracelets from them and have already started preparing for the next one. The best thing we can do for the people in this area is providing long term work in a nice and safe workplace and it is with great joy and pride that we share these photos with you and tell you about the partnership ❤️
Why fly tying?
"In the times we live today I often miss the tasks that have been replaced by machines and technology and I wonder how much it has affected our lives in a way that makes it more stressful. I do love my dishwasher and I would rather give up my car and half of my home then my washing machine. But doing the dishes by hand can be so relaxing and walking to the store can give you time to reflect on your life and rest your brain. It can give you the space you need for a new idea or at least improve your health. Today we don't have time to knit a sweater, fix broken things (a task that is so satisfying), read books or create our fishing flies by hand and I really miss all that. I miss killing time. I miss seeing grown up anglers with large hands, binding fur, feathers and tiny handpicked materials on a hook. Sitting on a river bench or inside their dirty truck, out in nature. I miss sitting with my mother and her friends knitting, something I haven't done in years. So, if not for anything else then simply my satisfaction, as well as too keep the idea and knowledge alive, I have created the Fly collection."
