GUDRUN - UCPYCLED jewellery
The jewellery collection GUDRUN consists of upcycled necklaces and earrings created by designers Steinunn Vala and Ólöf Jakobína for Hring eftir hring.
Upcycling is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
For the GUDRUN collection we collect and purchase jewellery people are not using any more. We then take the pieces apart, separate and clean all the material and reuse to create new GUDRUN necklaces and earrings.
The story:
Steinunn Vala's grandmother passed in the fall 2016. She was an architect and a collector like many from her generation and left behind her a beautiful house, full of art, design and jewellery. She wore colourful clothes and often large necklaces. Steinunn wanted to be able to keep some of her pieces and wear them herself but they did not look as good on her as they did on her grandmother. Then an idea came to her that perhaps she could take some of them apart, separate the beads, shells and stones and then use the material to created new pieces she, and other relatives, could use. In other words, upcycle (recycle) the jewellery pieces no longer in use.
The two designers were really interested in the idea and began collecting pieces from friends and family, recycling facilities as well as the Red cross, to use to make new pieces. If you have pieces resting in your drawers, please send them over to us and we will give you credit in return to use when shopping on our online store!
